 | A Real-time Current Monitoring System aboard the rig Sedco 601
Makassar Strait, Indonesia
January 2003 to June 2003Ocean Data engineers, while with Applied Coastal Research and Engineering, designed and installed
real-time metocean data acquisition systems aboard the Sedco 601 drilling platform in the Makassar
Strait. The rig was leased by TotalFinaElf and operated by TransOcean. The systems were comprised
of two acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) linked to a central computer (PC) for data
recording and display. The sensors measured vertical profiles of ocean currents from the surface to a
depth of approximately 2000 feet. The data were processed onboard the PC and displayed in realtime
in the barge control office aboard the rig.
Ocean Data personnel specified the sensor systems as well as mechanical deployment systems, integrated
and tested the instrumentation, and installed the systems at sea. In addition, they were responsible
for all project planning, schedules, logistics, and documentation, as well as performing quality
assurance processing on the resulting data. Data recovery from the program was 100%, with no
downtime recorded. Ocean Data engineers have also installed and maintained real-time current meter
systems aboard the drillship Discoverer 534, rig Actinia (Sedco), and the OceanStar (Diamond).
