 | Ocean Wave Measurements in Makassar Strait, Indonesia August 2004 to October 2005 As an add-on task to the Unocal pipeline study, Ocean Data was requested to collect one year of directional
ocean wave measurements. These data were required to augment existing metocean design
criteria for offshore facilities design. Ocean Data designed a mooring system capable of highresolution
wave measurements in approximately 290 meters water depth using ADCP-based techniques.
Surface and near-bottom currents were measured as well. Because these data were sampled
from a stand-alone mooring system, the results were far superior quality to those attempted simultaneously
from a drill rig in the region.
Ocean waves were sampled every two hours through the 426-day deployment period. 100 % of the
intended data were recovered successfully .
Each wave measurement resulted from a
burst average of 2048 points at 2 Hz. The
resulting wave spectra were well resolved,
with non-directional waves resolved out to 2
seconds, and directional waves resolved to 3
seconds. The results provided time series of
significant wave height, peak period, and
peak wave direction. The analysis report
separated the wave spectra into locally generated
wind waves and longer-period
swell, as each of these forces affect offshore
operations in different ways. The final report
was completed and delivered to Unocal
engineers 57 days after final recovery at sea.
