Ocean Current Measurements in the Gulf of Mexico
August 2004 to September 2005
Ocean Data Technologies, Inc. provided Norsk Hydro E&C of the Americas, AS with one year of ocean current measurements at the Atwater Valley block in the Gulf of Mexico. Data return from this program was 100%. These data were acquired under the 2004 Minerals Management Service mandate that drilling operations obtain full vertical current profiles at proposed offshore locations. Current observations at this deep water location were dominated by the Loop Current and associated eddies and meanders. In addition, the system captured highresolution hurricane-induced responses from Hurricane Ivan (in 2004) and Katrina (2005), as these storms passed quite close to the mooring location. Current profiles obtained during the storm passages indicate the relative rapid energy propagation from the surface to deeper layers. All data were recovered successfully from the location in September 2005, and the results delivered to Norsk Hydro engineers within 14 days of recovery at sea.
