 | Jon D. Wood
President and Senior Ocean Engineer
Ocean Data Technologies, Inc.
Mr. Wood is a Senior Ocean Engineer and President/founder of Ocean
Data Technologies, Inc. His expertise is the observation and analysis of
physical oceanographic processes, specifically ocean currents, tides, and
waves. Mr. Wood's wide range of experience includes data acquisition
system design and specifications, logistics planning, field deployments,
as well as data post-processing and advanced numerical analysis. These
skills uniquely qualify him to complete the most challenging observational
programs.
Mr. Wood has authored over 75 papers and technical reports in the past ten years, performing detailed
numerical analyses of oceanographic data sets to determine the predominant ocean responses to internal
and external forcing. These analyses use various techniques including tidal harmonic decomposition,
spectral and time series analysis, as well as statistical models to estimate return period extremes.
Mr. Wood has directed major scientific observational programs,
collecting high quality data sets in locations such as the Andaman
Sea (Thailand), Makassar Straits (Indonesia), Sulewesi Sea
(Indonesia), Sulu Sea (Malaysia-Philippines), Southern Ocean
(Australia), Niger River delta (Nigeria), Gulf of Mexico, Straits of
Gibraltar (Mediterranean Sea), Gulf of Maine, Cape Cod, Long Island
Sound, Delaware River estuary, even the summit of the
Greenland ice sheet. He has applied extensive field experience to
the design of simple, reliable data acquisition systems. A mechanical
design engineer and former machinist, he has designed deepwater
moorings, coastal systems, bottom frames of all varieties, realtime
data acquisition systems for small boats, drilling rigs, DP
ships, as well as to hard-wired shore stations.
Prior to founding Ocean Data Technologies, Mr. Wood served as
senior engineer and principal/partner at Applied Coastal Research
and Engineering, Inc. Under his leadership, Applied Coastal developed
an international reputation for high-quality oceanographic services
offered to deepwater oil and gas exploration interests. Mr. Wood was formerly a project leader at
Woods Hole Group, responsible for project management, supervising field personnel and field efforts,
developing technical and cost proposals, managing budgets and project schedules, as well as all technical,
data analysis, and reporting duties. Mr. Wood also worked as an ocean engineer at EG&G Washington
Analytical Services Center, Oceanographic Services branch, and began his career in 1984 as a
research project engineer at the Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory in Durham, New Hampshire. Mr.
Wood earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 and a Master of Science
degree in Ocean Engineering in 1991, both from the University of New Hampshire.
